CSC Regatta - Race Report - July 2018

Clacton Sailing Club hosted their annual Regatta on Sunday and all the competitors and spectators enjoyed a wonderful sunny day, a good breeze and even a visit from Captain Tim and the RNLI.

Visiting sailors from Gunfleet Sailing Club joined members of Clacton Sailing Club to create a fleet of almost 20 boats on a crowded start line.

RNLI Pennant race

The fast catamarans quickly pulled away from the rest of the fleet. With separate prizes for Cats and Mono's and the highest placed cadet competition was keen especially to lift the overall winning trophy.

With Cats completing 3 laps and mono's 2 and boats on different handicaps everything was to play for. Peter Boxer on his extremely fast A class knew he had to get as far away as possible from the slower boats and Ken Potts from Gunfleet Sailing Club sailing his very rapid RS600 mono hull was determined not to let Peter or indeed the other cats create an unsurmountable lead.

Triangles and Sausages

The course was one of Clacton's Commodore 'Martin Chivers' favourite a combination of triangles and sausages most certainly stretched out the fleet. Close hauled racing between groups became the order of the day with the fast catamarans and their colourful third sails often being hoisted but not always how they are intended and to the many spectators occasionally looked like tangled washing.

The fast mono hulls quickly tacking and making the most of wind shifts and the good sized Laser fleet being led by Larry Foxon usually at the helm of a Hurricane Catamaran being chased by the visiting sailors from Gunfleet.

Exilerating race

After an exilerating race and all the boats safely landed on the beach, sailors enjoyed a refreshment while the numbers got crunches and after race control double checked the numbers winners emerged.

CUCD Cup

At 13.45 sharp the start of the afternoon race was on for the highly acclaimed CUDC CUP first presented to the club in 1961

The freshening breeze made for a very brisk start with the first fast cats making the first bouy in the blink of an eye and determined to break free of the slower boats.

With every thing happening much quicker in the fresh breeze there were a number of capsizes including Daniel in his high performance A Class cat.

Boxer in his A class and team Burrell and Rolfe in their super fast Tornado Sport raced neck and neck at the front with Boxer taking line honours but had he done enough to bear the rest of the chasing fleet especially with team Wright /O'Sullivan on their Dart 18 and Ken Potts snapping at his heels and Potts attempting "the double". Additionally with in the fleet many other battles were being closely fought especially amongst the Lase

Unfortunately in any race there can only be one winner and after an epic journey by all the final result with competitors separated by seconds were
