Easter Bunny Series 24th & 25th April 2011

Warm sun and light winds greeted both holidaymakers and sailors over the Easter Holiday. These glorious conditions presented the contestants for Clacton Sailing Club’s Easter Bunny series run over Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday with taxing sailing. With light wind for all three races the sailor’s skill and tactics were put to the test. For the first race the 3 leading Dart 18’s crossed the start within 5 seconds of each  other and proceeded with a close tacking match along the shore. By the first turning mark Danny Cowler and Ban Lever’s Dart just had the lead which they held for the next 3 legs. The lighter weight crew of Ben Chandler and Laura Jakobsons Tabis used this advantage under these conditions to then snatch the lead at the Seaward mark. For the rest of the race the two catamarans raced in close company, but Chandler held on for the victory.

For race two Chandler had the starting advantage but by hugging the shoreline and breakwater hopping to cheat the tide the father and son team of Martin and Simon Chivers reached the first mark 10 seconds ahead of their pursuers. During the rest of this lap the lead changed several times with the first three boats crossing onto the second tour just 7 seconds apart. After another tacking match along the coast the lead continued to change and again for most of the final lap, until on the last beat to the line Danny Cowler and Ben Lever’s Dart 18 overtook Chivers to win by 30 seconds. The final race on Monday again saw light winds but contestants found more “puff” offshore this was more to Cowler and Lever’s liking which they capitalised on and crossed the line first to clinch the series.

Ben Lever and Dan Cowler took first place in both the 2nd and 3rd Easter Bunny Series.
