Class Series Race 2 - Race Report

Race Report for Class Series Race 2 held at Clacton Sailing Club on Sunday 18th May 2014

James and Eddie Parsons Class Series Race 2 2014

Perfect blue skies and warm South Easterly winds

The Class Racing Series continued on the Sunday in perfect blue skies and warm South Easterly winds.

Close racing as skills improve

There was a good turn out of catamarans and monohulls competing together using the RYA Portsmouth Yardstick handicap system.

The Spring flood tide had the disturbing effect of carrying the boats over the start line early and there were plenty of last minute manoeuvres as sailors gybed back downwind to avoid the penalty.

The Hurricane got clean away from the line crossing on time and at full speed

It was James and Eddie Parsons in the Hurricane who got clean away from the line crossing on time and at full speed up the first beat closely followed by Robert Mitchell in his first race of the year sailing his Dart 16 single-handed.

Martyn and Debbie Chivers are still perfecting the lively RS500 but this was ideal course to practise Gennaker launch and recovery with many downwind legs.

Experience of local conditions and the ability to judge when the tidal flow would benefit or hinder progress and the exact time to tack and gybe was the key to success in this race.

Cadets enjoying their own tussles

The Cadets were enjoying their own tussles: Brothers Zak and Jake Kurtulis battled with Jack Dempsey sailing in the clubs Topaz dinghies with the positions changing many times around the course. Jack eventually crossed just ahead of the brothers after nearly 2 hours of intensive racing. Sam Ransom seems to have found a steady crewing partner with Kaitie Brook and again raced in the clubs Omega whilst he awaits the return of his own Laser from the boat repairers.

Robert Mitchell takes the win in his Dart 16

The first 3 boats completed within two minutes of each other on corrected time as an indication of how tight the racing has become. Robert Mitchell was first overall in his Dart 16. Second place Martin and Debbie Chivers RS500 and third Pete and Eilish Dempsey in the Spitfire.
