Frostbite Flask - Race Report - October 2018

Sunday 21st October brought beautiful sunshine and a good breeze to Clacton Sailing club.

Larry and Mike - Frostbite Flask 2018

Members raced for the last trophy of the season Frostbite Flask which has been on the Club Calendar since 1975.

At 11.00 sharp the Start gun sounded for a fleet of catamarans and the race was on. Club members would need to complete 3 laps of a mix of an interlocking sausage and triangle to see who took the trophy and customary brandy.

Larry Foxon and Mike Rolfe sailing their Hurricane SX were the first to start closely followed by Ian Wright and Christy O'Sullivan in their Dart 18, Stafford Glover and Glenn Burrows on their Hurricane Sport, Brian Allen sailing his Hurricane SX single handed which certainly proved to be a handful as the wind picked up. Team Vennables Mark and George were the last to cross after experiencing gear failure.

The Race was on with Larry and Mike first to the windward mark and quickly launching their 3rd sail took a commanding lead of the chasing pack with Ian and Christy is their smaller Dart 18 determined not let the faster Hurricanes build a winning lead.

Spectators on the beach were treated to a magnificent sight of fast catamarans with multi coloured sails racing on a beautiful sunny day

The competition was fierce with some really close action sailing up and down wind with Larry and Mike in a winning mood until disaster struck ending in a spectacular capsize. This allowed Glover and Burrows who were snapping at their heels a clear opportunity to take control of the race and took finish line honours. But had they done enough?

With all the times in the calculations began and by a margin of a matter of seconds on corrected time, Ian And Christy were to prove worthy winners.
